Brewing process
Heineken is made of purified water, malted barley, hops, and Heineken A-yeast. The yeast converts sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide. In 1886 H. Elion finished the development of the Heineken A-yeast, which is the yeast that is still used for the beer.[1] The carbon dioxide results in the carbonation of the beer. The hops give the beer the bitter taste.[2]
Production
Since 1975 most Heineken beer is brewed in the Heineken brewery in Zoeterwoude.[1]
In 2006 25.8 million hectolitre Heineken beer was produced.[3]
Awards
In 1889 Gerard Adriaan Heineken received the Medal of Honour (French: Medaille d'Honneur) at the Exposition Universelle.[1]
