History
Killian's Irish Red is a traditional lager with an Irish heritage, based on the Killian family's recipe created for the Killian's brewery in Enniscorthy, Ireland in 1864. The Coors Brewing Company acquired the rights to brew and market the product in America and Killian's was introduced to the U.S. in 1981.
Properties
Killian's derives its color and taste from a special caramel malted barley (malts) that is roasted at a high temperature longer and more slowly than most malts. There are no coloring agents or artificial additives used in the brewing process. It is amber in color and produces a thick head on pouring, that goes away fairly quickly. It has a fruity yet hoppy aroma which seems to accurately describe the taste as well (possibly grapey). It leaves a clean mouth feeling upon swallow and has an easy finish, with maybe a slight hops taste.
Killian's is available in bottles, cans and kegs. A 12-ounce serving of Killian's has 163 calories and 4.9 percent alcohol by volume.
Mastering the Perfect Pour
1. Use a clean class to ensure that the beer is not inhibited.
2. Hold the glass at a 45° angle. Pour the beer, targeting the middle of the slope of the glass. Don't be afraid to pour faster or to add some air between the bottle and the glass.
3. About halfway through the pour, bring the glass to an upright 90° angle, and continue pouring in the middle of the glass.
4. Enjoy.
Trivia
- George Killian Lett was the Irish master brewer who first concocted his now-famous full-bodied lager. Today, his great-grandson, George Killian VII, is still active with Coors Brewing Company.
- Killian's Irish Red was originally named "Ruby Ale".
- The original brewery was the G. H. Lett Brewery of Enniscorthy, County Wexford, Ireland. It opened for business in the mid-1800s. This brewery closed it's doors in 1956.
- After the close of the brewery, George Killian Lett kept his brewing license current in the hope that one day, another company would carry on his proud family brewing tradition. In 1981, a delegation (led by Pete Coors) came to Ireland to arrange the production of George Killian's Irish Red under license for the U.S. Market.
