About the Beer
Samuel Adams Boston Lager is the best example of the fundamental characteristics of a great beer, offering a full, rich flavor that is both balanced and complex. It is brewed using a decoction mash, a time consuming, traditional four vessel brewing process discarded by many contemporary brewers. The process brings forth a rich sweetness from the malt that makes it well worth the effort. Samuel Adams Boston Lager also uses only the finest of ingredients including two row barley, as well as German Noble aroma hops. The exclusive use of two row barley not only imparts a full, smooth body but also gives the beer a wide spectrum of malt flavor ranging from slightly sweet to caramel to slightly roasted. The Noble hops varieties, Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang Tettnanger, add a wide range of floral, piney and citrus notes, which are present from the aroma, through the flavor, to the lingering smooth finish. The hops are hand selected by Jim Koch and the other brewers of the Boston Beer Company. These hops are the among the world's most expensive, costing twenty times as much as other hops.
History of the Beer
Samuel Adams Boston Lager led the American beer revolution, reviving a passion for full-bodied brews that are robust and rich with character. When it was introduced in 1985, Samuel Adams Boston Lager was unusual in a world of thin, light-bodied beers that were being churned out for mass market consumption. Following his great-great grandfather's recipe for a rich, amber lager, Jim Koch used only traditional brewing processes as well as the finest ingredients to brew his Samuel Adams Boston Lager.
About the Brewing
Samuel Adams Boston Lager is brewed using two row Pale and Caramel Malt as well as the German Noble hop varieties of Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang Tettnanger. It is brewed using a decoction mash and undergoes a secondary fermentation called Krausening, both of which impart a lingering, complexly sweet finish. Samuel Adams Boston Lager is also dry hopped using the Hallertau Mittelfruh hops for an enhanced hop signature in the aroma and finish. It takes about five weeks to brew. This long conditioning period gives Boston Lager a complexity and smoothness that have become its hallmark.
