Samuel Adams Summer Ale has been described as... Bright and citrusy, brewed with mysterious grains of paradise.

About the Beer

Samuel Adams Summer Ale is an American wheat ale. This summer seasonal uses malted wheat as well as lemon zest and grains of paradise, a rare pepper from Africa first used as a brewing spice in the 13th Century to create a crisp and spicy flavor and body. The ale fermentation imparts a background tropical fruit note reminiscent of mangos and peaches. All of these come together to create a quenching, clean finishing beer perfect for those warm Summer days.

History of the Beer

Wheat ales originated near Brussels, a wheat growing region in the 14th Century. The style got its name from its lighter color and cloudiness or veil, the result of suspended wheat proteins in the beer. These crisp ales were often brewed with coriander, juniper berries, and orange peel. We decided to use lemon zest and Grains of Paradise, to give our Samuel Adams Summer Ale its unique flavor. Grains of Paradise, also known as Malaguita Pepper, are more closely related to cardamom than pepper and according to medieval legend were thought (erroneously) to have aphrodisiac properties.
